Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden is an iconic tourist attraction located on the Dandenongs.
The gardens were called The National Rhododendron Gardens in 1960 and the name changed to become the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden in 2017, following community consultation.
The Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden is Victoria’s premier cool-climate backyard. With stunning views across the Yarra Valley, the garden features important collections of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and much more, at a setting of native and exotic trees. Seasonal changes ensure the garden is a year-round delight.
The garden houses Australia’s largest collection of Australian and overseas elevated hybrids of rhododendrons that cannot be replaced, re-bred or re-imported.
Bring a picnic basket and put up on one of those yards inside the gardens for a scenic day out. Ride the’Garden Explorer’ – a fee-for-service people mover which provides a 25-minute guided tour of the backyard.
When not in bloom, you can still soak in the beauty of bark textures, seed capsules, foliage contours and beautiful fragrance as you wander through the grounds. The 104-acre backyard is in close proximity to the township of Olinda

Opening hours
The garden is open 10.00am to 5.00pm daily (last entry 4.30pm). Entry to the garden is completely free.
The backyard could shut during dangerous weather conditions, fire danger or for important functions.
Dogs and other pets aren’t allowed.
Parking
These two sites are inside a two-minute walk of the principal entry and therefore are more convenient than the narrow/gravel The Road.
The Way to get there
The park is situated 500 meters in the Olinda township across the Olinda — Monbulk Road. Turn to The Georgian Road. The car park entrance is 50 meters on the right.
Tips for Visiting the Garden
- The Botanic Gardens attract tens of thousands of visitors, especially in springtime — when possible, visit during the week if it’s less crowded.
- Bring a picnic or buy lunch/snacks in the onsite cafe or at Olinda.
- Take time to observe that the Rhododendron Gardens — let a couple of hours at the least.
- Walk into Serenity view and sit some time… The foliage shape inspired chairs and structure is a beautiful place to unwind.
- Wear comfortable shoes because there’s a whole lot of walking!
