Netball Springvale & District Netball Assoc Inc.
Prior to 1965, around 18 clubs in the Springvale area were part of the Dandenong & District Women’s Basketball Association. The games were played on different courts every week, which included Dandenong High School, Menzies Ave Dandenong, Harrisfield, Oakleigh High School, Burden Park, Springvale South, Whiteside and in front of Springvale Town Hall. Springvale Town Hall. Players traveled to various locations by bus, train or bike, as well as by automobile. In the month of August 1964, there was a Special Combined gathering was held to decide on the split of the Association into two “Dandenong & District Women’s basketball Association and ‘Springvale and District Women’s Basketball Association’. It was attended by Mrs. Anne Trotter was president at the time, and for the purposes of the meeting, an independent chairperson with named Mrs. Champion was appointed in the role of “Chairwoman”. The gathering acknowledged the exemplary performance of the organization in the last 32 years. Its obligation to provide quality exercises for the players was successfully executed but the competition had grown too large and complicated to manage.
The separation, also called “split “split” was an amicable arrangement, and it was decided the Chandler Road would be the boundary between the two Associations. All clubs within Dandenong council’s side would remain with D&DWBA. Dandenong Council side will remain in D&DWBA and the clubs along Springvale would join the Springvale side would be part of the new Association named SV & D WBA. The agreement also stipulated that clubs that were assigned to either boundary would not be required to disband the Association to join the other for a time that was at least five years. This was done on the assumption the two Associations were given an equal chance to flourish.
In 1965, the Springvale & District Women’s Basketball Association was established and Teany Dickson was chosen as its first president.
The clubs that were involved in the early years were Springvale South, Ramblers, Clayton Youth Club, Noble Park, Oakleigh High School, Clayton Checks, Springvale North, Springvale Maroons, C.Y.C.W, St. Anthony’s, Harrisfield, Springvale Youth along with St. Joseph’s. Springvale South was a part of Oakleigh High School, Springvale South, Whiteside, Harrisfield Burden Park (grass courts) as well as in Clayton (behind a shopping centre at the car park) as well as in St Joseph’s. There were many clubs that came to come in overtime and started their junior competition, ranging from U10 to U18s that was extremely popular and continues to be played to this day. The Harrisfield Sports Club also had a mid-week women’s event at Harrisfield with around 15 teams competing.
The site is in The Springvale City Council electorate in the beginning, many gatherings with Springvale Council, along with marches to protest, finally got council to grant them the possibility of having a space that all teams could be accommodated in one location. The early 80’s saw the Springvale City Council finally provided the land to accommodate 16 courts and Pavilion. The Rowan Road Complex was completed in 1982.
However, in the week leading up to the official Opening the building was destroyed completely by fire. However, they continued to open the venue.
Each team takes part in a march that starts from at the Springvale South Shopping Centre to the courts on Rowan Road. A band was hired to mark the event and it was splattered with rain right from the beginning to the conclusion in the parade. Despite the weather, the ceremony was officially held, and the building was inaugurated by Cr. Bill Warner with the President of the Association Lynne Fleming cutting the ribbon.
Because of the fire, due to the fire, Association was forced into using temporary sheds for office and rooms for the club. The Committee did its best to raise funds and repair many of the items destroyed and were not covered by insurance. they escaped.
In 1985, The second Pavilion was completed and ready for use. The Association was able to grow to around 300 teams (2300 players) playing on Thursday nights (7.00 until 10.00pm) or on Saturdays (8.30am until 4.30pm) every week. The Association was successful and was able to raise enough money to install lighting and construct gazebos in the courts.
In the 90’s, because of a period of frequent rain that caused most matches to end up being cancelled, the Thursday Night Competition was transferred to the newly constructed Springers Leisure Centre. At Springers they played on three courts along with the current badminton facility between 5.30 until 11.00pm.
On the 5th of February 2001, a the fire again destroyed the structure and once more the facility was forced to construct temporary buildings until the pavilion as we now know it was completed and inaugurated on February 8, 2003.
