Woolworths’ history

Woolworths Limited, now Woolworths group, was founded by five Australian entrepreneurs: Percy Christmas, Stanley Chatterton, Cecil Scott Waine, George Creed, and Ernest Williams on 22 September 1924. The first Woolworths store was opened in Sydney’s Imperial Arcade, Pitt Street on 5 December 1924. It was known as “Woolworths Stupendous Bargain basement”. At the time, there were only 29 shareholders and very little interest in the brand’s rapid growth. However, trading continued after its third year and more shareholders contributed capital. After the third year, dividends rose from 5% to 50%.

More Woolworths branches opened in Australia after December 1924. This increased the consumer interest in Woolworths. Woolworths started selling a wide variety of goods, and also offered low prices and money back guarantees. Woolworths was at forefront of innovation in Australia. In 1926, Woolworths installed the first receipt printing cash register.

The second Woolworths supermarket, located on Queen Street in Brisbane, opened its doors on the 6th of August 1927. New Zealand’s first Woolworths store was opened in 1929. The chain was renamed to Countdown. After opening its first store in Hobart, Australia in 1940, Woolworths now owns a store in every Australian state.

Woolworths was able successfully run its stores as well as the company. They expanded their grocery selection. They began stocking more fresh fruits and vegetables in their stores. The first self-service grocery shop opened in Beverly Hills (Sydney) in 1955. In 1958, Dee Why opened the first supermarket. In 1960, Warrawong opened its first supermarket. Woolworths began to concentrate more on groceries, and the first Big W departmental store opened at Tamworth (New South Wales) in 1976.

Woolworths Group was established in 2018 and stopped selling single-use plastic bags at the checkout. Aldi, Australia’s third-largest supermarket, and Coles Supermarkets also made this change. This resulted in 1.5 billion fewer plastic bags ending up on landfills. Woolworths pledged to eliminate 180 tonnes of plastic packaging from all its products by 2018.
