Born on the 19th May 1861, Melba was the first Australian to reach international recognition as a classical musician. In the peak of her success she was reportedly the most famous woman in the world.
She studied in Paris in 1886, also functioned successfully in Brussels before establishing herself as the top lyric soprano in Covent Garden, London in 1888. She then conducted in most European towns before debuting in the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1893.
Known for her flamboyance and impeccable sense of style, her friends included famous artists, celebrities and royalty. The celebrated French chef Escoffier is a noted buddy, who famously created the dessert Peach Melba in her honor.
She returned to Australia regularly after she constructed Coombe Cottage in 1912 and has been active in the teaching of singing at the Melbourne Conservatorium. She chose to sing before the very last weeks of her life, making a mythical number of’farewell’ looks until her death in 1931.
Throughout the First World War, Melba raised substantial amounts for war charities and she was an tremendous supporter of all facets of the arts.

Only 5km north of this Melba Estate, the 120-acre Coombe Farm vineyard is among the oldest in the valley, and is still owned and operated by Melba’s descendants, the Vestey family. Having supplied grapes to some of Australia’s most recognized manufacturers, a growing portion of fruit is presently being grown and chosen specifically for the Coombe Farm brand.
The range includes nice, traditional design sparkling and elegant, cool climate tables wines which are classically varietal and regionally expressive. All wines are handcrafted in small quantities, from fruit deemed to be the finest the vineyard has to offer you.

Here in the Cellar Door, you can enjoy a tasting of the complete selection of wines. However, we invite all to linger awhile, savour a glass of wine and graze on options from our cellar door menu – over a game of croquet in the much-celebrated hedge.
Standard tastings are billed at $5 per individual (complementary to Melba Estate Club members) that is redeemable on any complete bottle purchase. Group tastings are billed at $10 per person. Please be aware that no refunds on tasting are available for groups of 7 or more. The current max group size to your wine tasting is 15. No booking is needed for regular tastings.
