Dingley Village Neighbourhood Centre

The Centre is part of the Neighbourhood House movement that started to develop during Victoria in the 1970’s early on. The primary goal of the movement was to provide people with supportive environment that is non-threatening and safe where they could exchange abilities and build relationships within the local communities. History

Dingley Village Neighbourhood Centre Inc. is a volunteer-led and a structured organization. This has been incorporated as a body that operates in an autonomous manner. It is part of the Neighbourhood House and Community Learning center sector and is responsible for programs that offer services to people living in Dingley Village. The programs and services are run out of both the centre as well as The Harold Box Hall, facilities that the Board of Governance leases from the City of Kingston.

In the 1970’s, Dingley was fortunate to have a dedicated group, who conducted a study into the requirements of Dingley. The results revealed that 66% those who took part were in favor of the establishment of an all-age facility and on the 13th of March 1975, the report was submitted to the local council. A small group was set up and they visited other community facilities as well as meeting with City of Springvale Engineer. The cost of building the Centre was $141, 039.00 and council approved the name Dingley Village Community Centre. A walkathon was held on the 11th of 1976 to raise funds to purchase equipment. The facility was officially inaugurated on July 31st, 1977, by the Mayor at the time, City of Springvale Cr. Harold Box. City of Springvale. Harold Box.

In 1978 in 1978, the Dingley Village Craft Market commenced with 35 stalls to provide an opportunity for people from the center to market their work and also for to help the Centre to raise money. Unfortunately, due to shifts in purchasing and spending habits, the market stopped operating in 2012. However, in October 2017, they started the Farmers’ Market every month as a regular event for the community that promotes local Victorian products and healthy food choices.

When they celebrated their 10th birthday on July 27, 1987, their expansion over the last 10 years was awe-inspiring for all of them. They are the managers of the centre as well as their Public Hall and over 500 visitors visit the centre every week. In 1988 the centre changed its name to”Dingley Village Neighbourhood Centre. Since then, they have increased in size thanks to the assistance from Council, Holmesglen TAFE and the Department of Human Services. They were able to create a registered 22 space occasionally run childcare centre.

In 2017, they have celebrated 40 years of service and dedication to the people in Dingley Village. They now see upwards of 1200 visitors who visit their doors every week, which is quite a difference in comparison to their modest beginnings.

The Centres uniqueness is the fact the fact that residents of the community that comprise their Board of Governance have always successfully managed the institution. The Board members are committed to serve and support their local community for the point of self-improvement.

The Dingley Village Neighbourhood Centre receives funding from many sources including fee for its services, activities and programs, as well as donations City of Kingston, Department of Families, Fairness & Housing Bendigo Bank Dingley Village and local service groups.
